Virus Prevention and Removal

Antivirus software is must-have protection. Keep it installed, enabled, and up-to-date at all times. But though antivirus software is critical, alone it's not enough to keep you protected. Follow sound security practices, install a firewall, and use other adjunct protection in combination with your own common sense.

SOUND SECURITY PRACTICES

1. Avoid downloads that entice you with FREE offers. An alarming number of FREE downloads on the web come with hidden executable files that install into your computer for malicious purposes. For example, free screensavers, videos, and music downloads often include spyware - an invisible Keystroke-Logger utility which records your every keystroke and later transmits this data to a hacker, malware - a program that maliciously disables your anti-virus program and ability to go online. At best, you may receive a pop-up advertising infection.

2. Never click ANYWHERE on a popup warning that implys "Your system may be infected. Click here to run a scan now!" This is referred to as "scareware". Every option to close this type of utility will actually infect your computer. Even the "X to close" has been pre-programmed to launch the malicious program which will now install up to 30+ spyware/scareware/virus infections within seconds. The SAFE option is to press CTRL + ALT + DEL keys to bring up the TASK MANAGER. From the Task Manager you can click the END TASK button to cancel the unwanted program and prevent it's installation. NEXT - open your true anti-virus and anti-spyware program and run a full scans to be certain you are not infected.
